Moses G. Sutton is the 5th great grandfather of Compatriot Brett Griffin.
Moses G. Sutton was
born in Wilkinson Co., Georgia, January 30, 1806. He married in Wilkinson
Co., January 12, 1827 to Eliza Webb,
daughter of Dawson and Phoebe Webb. The family moved to Lowndes
County about 1847 in company with her parents. They lived in
the Cat Creek district until about 1854 when they moved to near the present
day Poplar Springs Baptist Church. In 1856 they were cut
out of Lowndes into Berrien County. They were charter members of the
Poplar Springs Church when it ws constituted in 1858, and they
remained members until their deaths.

Moses and Eliza had
eleven children, four of which were boys and they all served in the Confederate
Army. Moses enlisted on September
1, 1861 in the Alapaha Guards, Company H, 29th Georgia Infantry. He
was 55 years old when he joined! He had been widowed for 4
years by this time and had grown daughters at home to take care of his youngest
children. He was discharged by the civil authorites at
Savannah on August 19, 1862 at the age of 56 years, 6 months and 19 days having
served 13 days short of a year in the army.
Moses returned home to his duties as a Justice of the Peace for Berrien County
1148th district and farming. Moses died July 17, 1875.
He is buried at Empire Primitive Baptist Church in present day Lanier County,
Georgia and has a Confederate tombstone marking his grave.
